2024 Ford Bronco review: Impressive features with a few drawbacks

Interested in the 2024 Ford Bronco? It is undoubtedly an excellent choice in the market today. Whether you’re eyeing the humble Big Bend, the rugged Raptor, or any version in between, the Bronco offers something for every taste. With options such as two or four doors, four-cylinder or six-cylinder engines, manual or automatic transmissions and various roof configurations, the Bronco caters to diverse preferences.

However, like any review, let’s look at the shortcomings. One notable downside is the considerable noise inside the Bronco, even with the addition of an acoustic liner to the hardtop. The interior quality doesn’t exactly match the price point of the vehicle, with some elements feeling substandard. Additionally, destination/acquisition fees seem prohibitively high, and dealer markups remain a concern. Handling may seem unremarkable, and fuel economy falls short compared to crossover competitors. Digital gauges may not be to everyone’s liking, and there are some issues with fitting the fabric roof.

For 2024, Ford has made some updates to the lineup. All models now feature a standard 12-inch touchscreen, although the keyless entry keypad has been removed. Additionally, every trim level except Raptor comes with a Trailer Tow Pack.

 

Specific trim-level changes include the discontinuation of the base trim, the inability to equip the Big Bend with the V6, and the Outer Banks no longer being available as a two-door option. The Badlands trim now exclusively offers the V6 unless a manual transmission is optioned. Badlands and Wildtrak now come standard with a Ford Performance heavy-duty modular front bumper, previously an optional feature, while the Raptor’s black fender flares are now optional, with body-colored ones becoming standard.

Moving on to the interior and technology, the Bronco offers a strong yet retro-inspired design, which complements its exterior aesthetics. While some models feature colorful accents, the overall cabin exudes character. Practical features like rubber-lined grips, roof-mounted switches and a lockable center console enhance the usability. The Sync 4 infotainment system, now standard with a 12-inch touchscreen, offers modern connectivity, although the digital instrument cluster may not be to everyone’s taste. However, material quality is lacking, as hard plastics dominate the interior.

In terms of size, the 4-door Bronco offers a midsize SUV experience with a roomy back seat and cargo area that leaves competitors like the Wrangler Unlimited behind. The Bronco Raptor is wider than other models, presenting challenges in tight spaces.

Performance-wise, the Bronco offers two engine choices: a strong 2.3-liter inline-four and a powerful 2.7-liter turbo V6. Both engines perform impressively, although fuel efficiency may suffer due to certain tire choices. Four-wheel drive is standard on all models, with various grades available.

Driving the Bronco is a mixed experience, influenced by factors such as body style, engine choice, and trim level. On-road, the independent front suspension provides better stability than competitors like the Jeep Wrangler, but the Bronco’s loud cabin and firm ride hinder overall comfort. Off-road capabilities are commendable, although the 2-door variant sacrifices cargo space for agility.

In terms of safety, the Bronco is equipped with essential features like forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Optional driver assistance features include blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. The Bronco has received high safety ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS, although its headlight performance could be improved.

Regarding pricing, Bronco models are subject to dealer markup, with destination/acquisition charges added to the total cost. Prices range from approximately $41,670 for a 2-door Big Bend to approximately $92,575 for a 4-door Raptor.

Ultimately, the 2024 Ford Bronco offers impressive off-road capabilities and a unique design, but it is not without its flaws. Potential buyers should consider factors such as noise levels, interior quality and pricing before making a decision. Despite its shortcomings, the Bronco remains an attractive option in the competitive SUV market.
