In a bizarre turn of events at Makhachkala airport in Dagestan, Russia, chaos erupted as hundreds stormed the terminal ahead of a flight from Tel Aviv, Israel. What started as an anti-Israel riot soon turned into a geopolitical blame game, with Russian President Vladimir Putin pointing fingers at Ukraine and the West.
Putin labeled the incident as an attempt to sow “chaos” in Russia, claiming it was orchestrated by the hands of Western special services, particularly from Ukraine. The riot, marked by waving Palestinian flags and antisemitic chants, raised concerns over the delicate situation in the region.
The US swiftly rejected Putin’s claims, dismissing them as “absurd” and attributing the events to social media instigation. John Kirby, spokesperson for the US National Security Council, characterized Russia’s accusations as “classic Russian rhetoric,” emphasizing that blaming external factors for internal issues is a common tactic.
The governor of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, added fuel to the fire by stating that the riots were incited “from the territory of Ukraine by traitors” using a Telegram channel named Morning Dagestan. This Islamist channel opposes Russian control of the region and has ties to Ilya Ponomarev, a former Russian MP who defected to Ukraine in 2016.
Morning Dagestan, however, denied any connection to Ponomarev or Ukraine, further complicating the narrative. The channel’s call to “meet the unexpected visitors” before the Tel Aviv flight landed raises questions about its involvement.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the airport riot, distancing Ukraine from any responsibility. Meanwhile, social media played a pivotal role in fueling antisemitic violence, with videos circulating widely, depicting the chaotic scene at the airport.
The US National Security Council’s spokesperson underscored the gravity of the situation, denouncing it as “hate, bigotry, and intimidation, pure and simple.” The comparison made between the airport incident and historical pogroms reflects the severity of the antisemitic nature of the riot.
As the blame game intensifies, it is crucial to separate fact from fiction. The events in Makhachkala underscore the impact of social media on escalating tensions and the need for responsible discourse. The world watches as geopolitical tensions intertwine with local incidents, leaving the truth buried beneath a complex web of accusations.
